1. Learn to Be a Good Listener

The first and one of the most important ways to improve your communication skills is to be a good listener. It is important to remember that communication is different from just talking or lecturing.

It is a two way mutual process that requires equal amounts of talking and listening and reciprocation of the two by both parties engaging in communication.

If you don’t make the effort to listen to the other person’s point and synthesize their meaning out of it, you won’t be able to convey your own ideas to them in the least.

2. Feedback

Just like it is important for you to listen to the other person, it is also important to make sure the other person is also listening and understanding your points if you want to know how to improve communication skills.

Take the time out to regularly ask for feedback from your listeners during the conversation and especially after stating an important discussion point. The feedback can be very important in guiding your further communication and is one of the important ways to improve communication skills.

3. Non-Verbal Communication

Not all communication is spoken; in fact, most communication consists of body language and is known as non-verbal communication.

To be an effective communicator, it is not only important to know what to say and how to say it, but also how to make sure your body is also conveying the same message your mouth is, because incongruence between the two can lead to your message being lost in translation and create misunderstanding.

Keep you posture straight and confident, and avoid slouching. Hand gestures are very important to drive a particular point home and make sure you are understood.

Eye contact with your listeners is also very important and conveying your ideas. Non-verbal communication is immensely important, especially in business, and it is one of the ways to learn how to improve communication skills at work.

4. Be Concise and Relevant

It is very important to not stray from the main message while explaining your idea to someone and communicating with them.

Often in discussions, both the listener and speakers go off track and end up talking about an entirely different things and reaching a vastly different conclusion by the end of the discussion. Try to avoid this and stay within relevant ground of the topic.
